Description

;W; I'm pretty sure this is the most epic thing I've ever done, if I'm allowed to say that sort of thing. (Download for full view, please!!)

Lining this took days alone, as did coming up with a proper theme and outfit. Shading was much faster than it normally is which makes me so happy because I love this method of shading, both how easy it is and how beautifully I think it turns out.

Paarlei was recently made Duke of Crossing once his cousin died; he's still a ways away from the family throne but that doesn't mean he can't dress up like royalty. His coat is inspired by 18th century royalty. His boots: pure fashion. In his hands he holds his Victoria Cross. (Whether or not he actually earned it is still a controversial topic.)

The halo around his head is inspired by 13th century Byzantine icons and also represents the sun. His mane is that of a lion's. He has made himself as kingly as possible in a relatively high fashion.

I'm so proud of this.

PLEASE NOTE: I did not come up with the pose. This current and final assignment is to 'unsketch' our models. Our poses were, essentially, given to us. Here's Paarlei's original sketch-pose: [link]

This picture is impressive on many levels, Abra:

The lines are clean, the colors are well-coordinated, and you added a lot to your given pose by sprawling out Paar's gorgeous wings and adding that cross in his hands. Not to mention that soul-piercing expression of his.

The shading has a beautiful texture to it, as to be expected from one of your digital paintings. Not just the shading though, the sweeping brush stroke in the background too. Even the faded shadow beneath Paarlei blends and meshes beautifully with the look and feel of the overall piece.

Furthermore, the sun design behind his head is very eye-catching, adding a bright pop of color and visual interest using those hundreds of tiny circles to make a series of larger circles.

I never feel quite right giving five stars on everything when I critique a piece because nothing is truly perfect. However, I also don't feel it's fair to lower your score either, because I honestly can't find anything wrong with this picture. It's not my absolute favorite of all your deviations ever, but I do like it and the sheer amount of technique to be admired here cannot be ignored. The most I could lower is half a star on Originality or Vision because the pose wasn't chosen freely by you, BUT that was a stipulation of the contest you had no control over.

So, five stars on everything it is. I learn a lot observing you, so thank you very much for sharing. For all your hard work and masterful artistry, all twenty are, in my opinion, more than well deserved.
